The Department for Communities and Local Government in close liaison with the Scottish and Welsh Government have been working with Local Fire and Rescue Authorities to ensure that appropriate emergency plans are in place to deliver any alternative arrangements needed.
Because of the impending industrial action businesses should: - Review their current fire risk assessment making sure ALL potential hazards have been identified and controlled. - Ensure ALL fire doors are kept closed – not locked. If the fire doors are the automatic type check they operate as per the manufacturers specifications. - Check fire fighting and detection systems are all working including automatic systems. - Emergency lighting should not be overlooked, check it works. - Fire signs are often taken for granted, make sure they are still pointing the correct way, clean and readable! - Escape plans must be in place, ensure employees understand them including the assembly points.
Arson can be a substantial risk for business, to minimise this make sure good housekeeping is in place, look carefully at where a fire could be started. Check the perimeter of the premises for any potential fuel sources e.g. are there any of the following at the side of the fence – wooden pallets, skips containing flammables wood, paper, and cardboard. Consider the use of security lights, CCTV and security staff. Are the premises secure and if not take steps to make them so.
